With Canberra in the midst of its hottest summer in years, don’t forget your pets need relief from the heat as well. While the beach may be the first point of call for most Australians in the summer, Canberra has loads of spots sure to get those tails wagging. We asked @spock.the.rednose for his fave places to swim.
Uriarra Crossing -Stromlo
This one is unique, located just outside of city but makes you feel miles away from all the hustle and bustle. A bushy landscape and sweeping nature views, perfect for picnics and swimming for you and the pup. A clean spot to set up camp for a day over the long weekend.
Lake Ginninderra- Belconnen
A very convenient spot as it’s next to both a BBQ area and dog park! Essentially everything you need this long weekend.
Lake Burley Griffin – Yarralumla
When you think of Lake BG you think overcrowded and busy lanes from bridge to bridge. But the less populated side over on Brown Street in Yarralumla (where the boats enter from) is a doggy heaven. A small sand area for them to roll around on before taking a dip and a dog park meters away for when they feel like a quick play.
Murrumbidgee River – Point Hut Crossing
If you’re on the south side, head down to Point Hut Road. The large river means you’ll be able to find a secluded swimming spot to cool off.
Molonglo River – Oaks Estate
A shallow river for a splash about in Oaks Estate. The old tress promise shady areas and the grassy banks allow off leash opportunities for well-behaved dogs.
Batemans Bay
For those locals who can’t look past an annual Aus long weekend down the coast, Tomakin Beach is doggy friendly and along most of the beach dogs are allowed after 4:30pm. Spock enjoys riding along on a Kayak which can you hire from Mossy Point. If your doggo is more of a fisherman you can hire a boat from Moruya River to fish with your dog.
