The AAMI Black Opal Stakes was the centre of action as thousands of well dressed Canberrans filled a sunny Thoroughbred Park last Sunday, March 8.
Fashions on the Field caused a stir, with the stakes as high as the heels. Amongst the sea of great prizes, the ‘Classic Ladies Race wear’ trip for 2 to Paris was highly sought after.
This year’s Fashions on the Field saw a record number of 112 individuals take to the stage, with entrants from as far as Queensland and Western Australia.
Dark yellow and aubergine dominated the autumn looks on the day, as well as classic red, black and white.
Local milliner and fashion designer, Viktoria Novak, twirled into first place with her classic attire and vintage trimmings- all handmade and coordinated in this autumn’s colour palette.
‘Romance on the Field’ dominated the Classic Couples Race wear category, with contestants asked to legitimise their couple status by kissing on stage.
This light hearted display attempted to exercise the category’s strict guidelines and wean out ‘fake’ couples, amidst previous years controversy.
While the ladies on the catwalk were dreaming of Paris, Sydney trainer Gary Portelli was winning his third Black Opal Stakes with his lighting fast horse, Delago Bolt.
Portelli will attempt the Golden Slipper on April 4 with the stakes set out $3.5 million.
Myer Ladies Day will take place on Saturday April 4 at Thoroughbred Park, with more frills, flounces and bows for the ladies; and the opportunity to win more fabulous prizes.
