Local hip hop duo D’Opus & Roshambo have been around the block and it’s been 4 years since the release of their first EP ‘The Question.’
Since then, the boys have filled their time with a long string of high profile support acts with the likes of Cut Chemist, Blackalicious, The Herd and Muph & Plutonic, just to name a few. This time was also filled to the brim with brainstorming, song writing and laying down the tracks of their new album ‘The Switch’ which was released last Saturday, 28 June.
“We called it The Switch because we switched up our sound. We whacked lots of genres in there and it also means an ability to switch and adapt to different circumstances,” Rowan Thomson said, AKA Roshambo. True to his word, ‘The Switch’ is jam packed with a whirlwind of drum & base, indie rock and funk influences, ‘switching’ up their signature hip hop sound.
“We have lots of live instruments involved this time and we’ve also involved other bands that you might not expect us to collaborate with, like indie rock band Hancock Basement. We are lucky that a lot of the people who are featured on our album are friends of ours, so collaborating came really naturally. We are lucky to know so many talented people!”
The first single ‘Million Dollar Bill’ off The Switch is the kind of ‘feel good’ song you would expect from any debut release, with enough bite to have you bopping year head. It’s this edge that has scored them frequent air play on Tripe J’s Hip Hop show.
“I’m the most excited about hearing ‘The Basement’ on the radio, which we did with Hancock Basement, just because it’s so different. We will probably lose a few fans and gain a few, but that’s ok!”
The Album the Switch is released on Saturday 28 June, through Shogun Records. Head to ANU Bar this Saturday 5 July for the Official Album Launch gig!
