The marriage of landscape and wine, or as the French say, ‘terroir’, has long been celebrated. Now, an outstanding food and wine experience in the National Gallery of Australia takes this union to new heights.
A dinner, designed around the world class Shirazes and Shiraz Viogniers of the Canberra District is being held in conjunction with the Turner to Monet: The Triumph of Landscape exhibition.
Champion wines to be featured include the Lerida Estate’s 2006 Shiraz Viognier (Champion Wine, 2007 Canberra Regional Wine Show), the internationally recognised 2006 Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier (95 points from Robert Parker), the 2005 Collector Marked Tree Road Shiraz (Champion Wine, 2007 NSW Wine Awards), as well two great northern Rhone wines from Cote Rotie and St Joseph.
The evening will commence with an introduction to the Turner to Monet Exhibition by one of the curators of the exhibition, Ms Christine Dixon, Senior Curator, International Painting and Sculpture, followed by a viewing of the paintings and then the dinner.
‘This dinner provides a unique opportunity to taste some very special Canberra District wines’ says Anne Caine, Managing Director of Lerida Estate Wines and President of the Canberra District Wine Industry Association. ‘On behalf of the Canberra District Wine Industry Association we wanted to take the opportunity that the exhibition presented to promote our wine region as one where truly great wines area made, and in particular, Shiraz and Shiraz Viognier wines, for which our wine district is now famous’.
Tim Kirk from Clonakilla, Alex McKay from Collector Wines (formerly Kamberra Wines), Nick O’Leary from Nick O’Leary Wines and Jim Lumbers and Malcolm Burdett from Lerida Estate will be in attendance to speak about their wines. Huon Hooke, well known wine writer from Good Living/Sydney Morning Herald will also be attending to provide a commentary not only on the local wines but also the international wines featured at the dinner.
‘The Turner to Monet: The Triumph of Landscape Wine Dinner will be a wonderful celebration not only of some magnificent landscape paintings, but some magnificent Canberra District wines’ said Anne Caine.
