Directed by Australian rising talent Claire McCarthy, The Waiting City tells the story of an outwardly happy Australian couple who journey to India to collect their adopted child.

Fiona (Radha Mitchell), an ambitious corporate lawyer, arrives in Kolkata with her husband Ben (Joel Edgerton), an adventurous spirit and struggling musician. With Fiona’s luggage missing, their stressed relationship frays afresh when the adoption agency announces new delays to see the child whom they have waited two years to adopt.

Soon the intoxicating mystic power and spirituality of the city pulls them in separate and unexpected directions and the vulnerability of their marriage begins to reveal itself. Are they even suitable as a couple, much less parents?

The first Australian feature film to be shot entirely in India, The Waiting City is an intimate, complex love story of transformation, set against the exhilarating epic backdrop of Kolkata. India offers Fiona and Ben a different way to look at everything and each other. They rediscover themselves and a belief in life’s possibility, making for a timely, uplifting and joyous piece of cinema.
