On an uncomfortably hot Sunday, it was with relief that the afternoon saw the clouds descend on the sky and a soft breeze pick up in the air. The weather man changed his tune, and it was just in time, because at 3pm hundreds of sun hat wearing punters filled Mount Majura Vineyard for their open-air cinema annual event ‘Shakespeare in the Vines.’

There was a laid back vibe at the vineyard, as punters arranged themselves on picnic rugs, lounged on outdoor furniture and sipped chilled local wine. High spirited chatter hung in the cool afternoon air.

Yummy dinner hampers supplied by Mount Majura, with the help of Rolls Choice, were distributed and attentive staff patrolled the grounds with wine bottles poised, ready to top-up empty glasses.

The Essential Theatre Company kicked off ‘Comedy of Errors’ with an up-tempo disco skit that had the crowds roaring with laughter.

The open air cinema proved to be unique experience, in part due to the picturesque venue. With rolling mountains at every turn, one could be excused for thinking they were miles away from Canberra. The laid back community vibe, local wine and great show meant friends were made and laughs were had. I hope we see more of this style of event in Canberra soon.
