Celebrating years of dazzling opening nights, dramatic plays, high-energy musicals, and everything in between, 2025 marks the Canberra Theatre Centre’s 60th birthday.
While details of the Theatre’s full 60th year program of celebratory events and special performances are yet to be revealed, they have announced The Australian Ballet will return 60 years later from when they opened the Theatre on 24 June 1965.
Bringing Johan Inger’s award-winning production of Carmen, the journey takes Georges Bizet’s 19th-century opera into the modern world with a breathtaking display of athleticism and passion.
“We are thrilled to welcome back The Australian Ballet, 60 years to the day that they opened the Canberra Theatre Centre to great fanfare in 1965. Much has changed over the decades, however, the national ballet company has remained one of the nation’s great arts organisations,” says Director of the Canberra Theatre Centre, Alex Budd.
To celebrate the special occasion, the Canberra Theatre Centre will be hosting an exciting opening night celebration with champagne and canapés, exclusively for those who also purchase tickets on Friday 20 June.
The Australian Ballet’s Carmen will be at the Canberra Theatre Centre from 20-25 June 2025.
