Can you believe it’s almost been a year since Walter Cafe opened on our beautiful Lake Burley Griffin? Becoming a hotspot for lakeside walkers, foodies and those who can’t resist a picturesque view, Walter was a hit from the get-go. Now keeping diners on their toes, they’ve refreshed the menu.
Since opening, seasonality has always played a role on the menu, and while you can still find some of the same dishes you know and love, expect to find slight tweaks that highlight ingredients currently in season.
“The new menu at Walter Café is refined comfort food, allowing the seasonal produce to shine on the plate. Classic dishes with a slight twist,” says Head Chef, Matthew Ouwerkerk.
For breakfast, the must-try dish is still the crowd-favourite corn and zucchini fritter, made with house-cured salmon, creamed mascarpone, beetroot relish, 20 dukkah, pickled fennel and a slow-cooked egg. While if you tend to skew more toward the sweeter breakfast items, the house-made vanilla waffle with smashed banana, ricotta, honey and a cinnamon nut crumble is incredible.
Lunch-wise, the menu has been elevated, following a more sophisticated style much like their sister venue The Marion. This is reflected through plates such as pan-fried gnocchi with goats cheese cream, walnut salsa and spiced pumpkin, chargrilled salmon with salsa verde, green beans and long rocket, and pork cotoletta with shaved cabbage salad, lemon and mustard.
Meals like this are also not complete without a glass of wine, which diners can choose from a locally curated wine list of the Canberra region’s best drops.
The sweet selection is also something to note, especially the tart of the day, which Ouwerkerk tell us is where he lets his pastry team run wild with their ideas.
While it’s always a good idea to stop off at Walter in between your bridge-to-bridge walk for a coffee and sweet treat, nothing beats sitting down for a delicious meal overlooking those sweeping views of the lake. Whether it be catching up with family and friends on the weekend, or a corporate lunch during the week.
