There’s only four weeks until travelling regional music festival Groovin the Moo hits Canberra with a line-up rivalled by our big city counterparts – Vampire Weekend, Silverchair, Tegan & Sara and more.

With the first GTM taking place in 2005, in the town of Gloucester (just north of Newcastle) the festival has consistantly delivered on its ethos of bringing ‘the music’ to regional cities.

Stephen Halpin, GTM Promoter, said that taking the festival to a ‘capital city’ was an interesting decision for the team to make.

“We looked at the population of Canberra and it’s still relevant to the population of places we were visiting, like north Queensland and the Newcastle area, so it fitted with that. I must admit Canberra being the capital was an odd one for us, but we just though oh well – what the hell. It seems to be working,” Halpin said.

Working indeed. With a capacity of 14,000, GTM, Canberra has already reached 12,000 in ticket sales, and with a line-up that includes New York indie sensation Vampire Weekend, you can’t blame Canberrans for getting a little excited.

“Vampire Weekend have options to go anywhere in the world, they can go to Europe or anywhere they like, so it’s always a great achievement getting bands of this calibre locked in. We didn’t hear confirmation until early February.”

How does one actually go about ‘locking in’ big-time international acts to show-down in Bendigo, Townsville, Maitland, Canberra and Banbury?

“The artists love GTM, especially the big bands, because when they tour in Australia, they tend to just go to capital cities, which I’m sure they really enjoy, but the idea of performing in different parts of Australia really appeals to them.”

With the festival set to take place at the University of Canberra’s meadows, it will be interesting to note whether GTM’s mammoth line-up steals the limelight of Canberra’s iconic Stonefest, which is scheduled for October, in the same location.

Set times will be released soon but Halpin recommends we highlight Silverchair.

“I think Silverchair are going to be fantastic. Just seeing their production specs and what they’re bringing, I’m going to guess that it’ll be a pretty amazing show!”
