Canberran designer, Sara Wurcker, has been busy hunting, gathering and sewing, since graduating from Bachelor of Design at CIT last year.

Unlike many of our graduates jumping ship to the bright lights of Sydney and Melbourne, sketchbook in hand, high hopes in mind, Sara has set out to pave her own future, within the landscape of Canbera fashion.

Her label, h u n t e r, was unveiled last December at CIT’s Fashion Design Graduating Parade: Notions, with a mix of hand printed fabrics and girly designs. Her line has since developed into an anthology of eclectic and wearable street looks for the new romantic.

Sara’s aesthetic stems beyond mainstream high fashion, instead her garments tell tales of the past, in a youthful and nostalgic fashion, saying, “I focus on themes and ideas found in my favourite novels rather than trends and seasons.”

This refreshing approach gives her line some serious street cred and h u n t e r recently took to the catwalk alongside a mismatch of Canberra bands and labels at Braddon boutique, Itrip Iskip’s Grass Stains event.

I couldn’t think of a better person to ask, so I just had to bring up the question that plagues Canberra’s fashion scene – does Canberra have style? “Of course, you just have to know where to look. There are some great local designers such as Red Fox, Book Club and luuk who have been doing some amazing things,” Sara said.

“I think their work is testament to some exciting things going on in the Canberra fashion community.”

This season you can find Sara’s latest collection, ‘Summer Babe’ displaying an array of playful colours and textures at Braddon boutique Itrip Iskip.

“It features sheer lace blouses, tutu skirts and short leggings. All of the pieces have been hand made and are in limited stock, they are also soon to be available from Sydney and Melbourne boutiques.”

There’s no doubting that h u n t e r is one to watch, this summer and beyond.

Viva la Canberra fashion.
