In one of two 2010 Street Writing Commissions, the Street Theatre are thrilled to present Underage House Party Play from June 3 to 5: a hormone-ridden scramble through the thorny maze of teenage party politics in search of the glamorous side of being young and messed up, by local writer David Finnigan.

“We need someone to host this party […] let’s say he wears his hair like this – let’s give him severe motion sickness – and let’s call him, I don’t know, what’s your name?”

Performer Matthew Kelly takes on the role of five archetypal teenagers, embodying each individual journey through the coming-of-age grinder, on a single night at a typical teenage rager.

David Finnigan (oceans all boiled into sky, Vampire Play, co-director of Crack Theatre Festival) was commissioned by the Street Theatre to explore theatrically the things “that no one else was going to hack at – the dirty end, the fag-end, of being a teenager.”

Directed by Green Room Award-winner Stephen Barker and with lighting design by Gillian Schwab, Underage House Party Play delves into the seamy last days of youth: sex, drugs, and fights, new loves and lost opportunities. Workshopped by Finnigan, Kelly, Barker, and the Street Theatre’s Caroline Stacey, this newly commissioned work, part of the Solo at the Street 2010 series, embodies the Street Theatre’s commitment to providing creative opportunities to local artists.
