On Friday 16 April we have a plan, we’re going to attend to the exhibition launch of Make, Believe, a collaborative project by Canberra fashion designer Amelia Thompson (of local fashion label, Grazed Youth) and artist Anna Madeleine.

The event is set at ANCA gallery in Dickson and although I’ve worked in the suburb for four years, I have no idea where to find it, and we set out on a search, GPS in hand.

We find ANCA tucked away, just off Antil street, opposite the Dickson Community Centre. It’s a small building that sits in the shadows of the street. If it wasn’t for the up-tempo music humming from the venue and light shining from the doorway, we would have walked straight past.

Upon entrance we’re greeted by a vibrant Eline Martinson, Canberra Corsetiere and Fashion Designer, who appears poised donning a red silk corset and neck piece by Grazed Youth.

I’m also greeted by an array of Grazed Youth jewellery, trinkets and more, which sit sparkly and bright on a vintage dresser behind Eline. Despite wanting to touch and purchase everything, I shimmy past in anticipation of what the exhibition will hold.

Stepping into the main gallery space I’m greeted by a large portion of Canberra’s art/fashion scene, sipping red wine and chatting about the art.

Amelia and Anna have gone to great lengths to create a cohesive experience. Encompassing art, digital media and fashion, the pair have created a collection of prints, a video installation and a clothing collection all within the realm of ‘Make, Believe.’

A fashion show was announced and began to take shape against the white walls of the space, showing a playful mix of dainty pieces with an abstract edge. Kooky styling was provided by Canberra Stylist, Gerard Wilton.

Make, Believe will run from Friday 14 April – Sunday 25 April 2010 at ANCA Gallery, 1 Rosevear Place Dickson ACT 2602,(02) 6247 8736. Pieces can be purchased through www.grazedyouth.com.
