It was a family affair as Guy Sebastian and Chris Sebastian provided an incredible night of entertainment at the Canberra Southern Cross Club, Woden.

Keeping it in the family, twenty-year-old Chris Sebastian performed solo to start the evening off. Performing to a backing track for his first two Chris Brown-esque songs, it was clear to see he was already following in his older brother’s footsteps.

Whilst his club-anthem originals at times seemed generic, Chris Sebastian was able to really display his strong voice covering the Kings of Leon tune ‘Use Somebody’. It was a cover version that included Guy’s guitarist, and the duo created an original and interesting interpretation of the song.

It was soon big brother’s turn to entertain the audiences, and the sold-out Southern Cross crowd became appropriately excited when Guy and his band entered the stage.

In his first performance in Canberra for two years, the now LA resident quickly took hold of the audience’s attention with the full support of a killer four piece band.

The first song to noticeable blow the audience away was the band’s cover of John Lennon’s ‘Jealous Guy’, accompanied by a strange yet endearing ‘poo story’ introduction.

The set continued to take off from this point, with plenty of hip-shaking and infectious grooves.

After performing more songs from his new, Like it Like That album, Guy performed a solo loop-pedal medley. It was an entertaining and relaxing break from the pop onslaught that had been occurring, and showed that Guy is still not afraid to take risks.

Canberra was the sixth stop on Guy’s last national tour until 2011, and it was clear his band were a well oiled unit. Their sound was fuelled by drummer Terapai Richmond, whom is undoubtedly one of Australia’s finest musicians. It was his painfully hip drum groove on the tune Attention that got the crowd up and dancing.

Guy Sebastian may receive criticism for his appearance on reality TV show, Australian Idol, but regardless of anyone’s view, tonight proved his abilities as an astounding singer and musician.

It was a fantastic evening of entertainment, certainly an intimate show that will linger long in the minds of those who were lucky enough to attend.
