ANU School of Art exhibition space was appropriately transformed into a minimalist runway setting on Tuesday 1 September for ‘Crowned & Bound.’
The event saw the coming together of ANU’s metalsmithing students and Manuka’s upmarket boutique, Department of the Exterior.
Over 400 people gathered to witness Australian designed fashion for SS09/10 complemented by the students self designed and created accessories.
While the clothes proved an edgy focus, many of the jewellery and object pieces became somewhat lost against the often boldly printed fabrics.
Having said this, eye catching and clever design was evident, with gladiator inspired weapon-esque arm bands and a draped, silver beaded head piece by Mary Clare Walker truly the highlight of my year in Canberra design.
Make-up looks were by Andrew Canon, with colourful angular eye make-up completing some of the more post-modern looks.
Oriental treats by local restaurant China Plate were served and a raffle completed the evening.
It was a refreshing opportunity to view an open-invitation free design event in Canberra and local folk embraced our latest batch of metalsmithing students with warm reception.
Clothing that graced the catwalk on the evening is available now from Department of the Exterior.
The student’s latest exhibition ‘Eleven Times Twenty’ is on show now at ANU School of Art Workshop until Thursday, 10 September. The exhibition showcases a collection of jewellery in correlation to the items shown at Crowned & Bound.
