Mint Road Cafe
[1 right]Of all the inner city suburbs in Canberra, Narrabundah is the one that – for some unknown reason – has been neglected on the café front. All that changed late in June, however, with the arrival of Mint Road Café. Since then, the little shop on Boolimba Street has developed a loyal following among coffee fans throughout the area. So, why Mint Road? Simply a love of its freshness and brightness meant mint was perfect for a café. Owner Clinton (who speaks proudly of his family’s Narrabundah heritage) is something of a car enthusiast, hence the inclusion of ‘Road’. Entering the cute and cosy café, the stripes of mint on the walls work nicely with the natural elements – of wood, of concrete and of stone – that highlight the space without overwhelming it. So many customers refuse to believe the wonderful vertical garden to be real, and can only be convinced otherwise through a forensic inspection. [2 left]Coffee is the centrepiece of any café, and the foundation upon which reputations are built. Mint Road boasts an Australian-exclusive blend of Portoli Coffee. With Clinton behind the sparkling Milanese coffee machine (which he painted mint green himself!) the pour is completely without bitterness. It’s a winning combination, and a nice touch that the coffee machine and beans are from the same factory. For the hungry, simple (though delicious) breakfasts and lunch is on offer. All selections are available all day so, if you wanted a breakfast jaffle at lunch (and who wouldn’t?) Mint Road is happy to oblige. Otherwise, takeaway rolls are available as well as delicious local pasties and brightly coloured macaroons for those with a sweet tooth. Clinton is certainly keen to keep a focus on the local Narrabundah trade – getting to know the preferences of the regulars – while the word continues to spread. Keeping a focus on getting to know the customers, and working hard to meet their needs means Mint Road is here to stay. The Narrabundah shops must be very pleased to once again have a café, as much as the Mint Road cafe is proud to be there.
