Does anyone else get the feeling that all the cool shit happens at Uni after you’ve already graduated? You may have heard whispers of what’s to come for the ANU Pop-Up Village and now the rumours are true. The University has teamed up with Yours & Owls – who are known for throwing an epic party or two – to transform campus life with live music at Molo.
With the help of the entertainment group, Wollongong’s equivalent (UOW UNIBAR) nourished local musicians and increased the appetite of live music in the area. Now on the touring circuit for bigger name musicians, Yours & Owls are hoping to replicate their efforts right here in Canberra with the hopes of ensuring Molo Live @ ANU solidifies its place as a music mainstay.
“The stigma around a University bar is that it is only for students,” said Ben from Yours & Owls. “What we saw change in Wollongong was that the venue became recognised as a part of the city with our influence. We make it a point to cater to everything from electronic to Triple J indie, rock n’ roll and older classics as well. In turn, we saw the live music scene flourish in Wollongong, which is what we are hoping to do for Canberra.”
Situated a few minutes’ walk from the CBD, the pop-up village has already made an impact on the local area for its hub of eateries. The difference is, now, you can enjoy a chilled night-time drink at Molo while being entertained with live music while scoffing down your Brod.
Molo Live will be launching on Saturday 26 May with a huge party featuring Polish Club, The Gooch Palms, Citizen Kay, Genesis OWUSU, Purple Sneakers DJs, Next Gen & Cressy (Good Content).
The plan is for Yours & Owls to leverage off the two University venues and grow them collectively, to allow bands more places to tour.
“Our aim is to get the Uni and the city activated more regularly with a focus on touring acts. Anywhere we go, we make it a part of our ethics to engage with local talent and help them grow. A music scene in any area is reliant on the strength of its locals,” Ben said.
