Sister’s are doing it for themselves, in rom-com How to be Single. Produced by Drew Barrymore this film has all of your favourites including main character and Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson, Australian comedian Rebel Wilson, and Leslie Mann.
Dakota Johnson plays Alice, a young woman who has been with the same guy through college but now wants a break to find herself and experience what it’s like to be single in New York City. At her first real job as a law clerk, Alice meets a live-wire called Robyn (Rebel Wilson) who has ‘being single’ nailed down to a tee.
Alice’s sister Meg (Leslie Mann) however has been career focussed for a very long time and shows what it means to be an independent woman when she decides to have a baby with the help of a sperm donor. Ironically, when Meg does fall pregnant she finds the man she wants to raise a child with.
Alice finally finds peace with being single and doing the things she’s always wanted to do by herself, Meg has her baby and Robyn continues to be a party-hard spinster.
Barrymore has tried to portray Alice as a character who is drawn into submission by men. But … I’m not buying it! Dakota Johnson doesn’t lose herself in these relationships, she doesn’t seem caught up in the idea of love. The whole idea of Alice being hung up on the idea of love is flawed. She is quick to take rejection and doesn’t seem phased by the idea of being single and hooking up with random guys.
While there are parts of this movie that will have you laughing, a lot of Rebel Wilson’s lines seem a little ‘try hard’ – forcing you to laugh.
Overall, I wasn’t a fan and I wasn’t buying what the actors were selling.
