Following the announcement earlier in the month that Italian restaurant, Brunello was closing its doors on City Walk, we got word that a new Middle Eastern restaurant was taking its place.

Swiftly preparing the concept and menu, Azima is set to open its doors next Friday 31 May. Loosely translating to ‘an invitation to feast’, it will offer a new dining experience to Canberra. Focusing exclusively on traditional Lebanese cuisine, guests can expect generous banquet menus with vibrant flavours at an affordable price point.

The third Canberra venture to open in recent years by hospitality entrepreneur and operator, Adam Elchakak (owner of Inka and KOTO), the project has been created alongside co-owner and hospitality consultant, George Khoury. A deviation from the Asian-influenced concepts that Elchakak is typically known for, Azima will serve classic home-cooked dishes that both owners grew up with.

At a time when many households are tightening their budgets, it marks a welcome addition to Canberra’s dining scene, with a come-as-you-are attitude.

“We wanted to create a place where people can still go out, spend time with family and friends and have a great meal any day of the week—without worrying about their bank balance,” says Khoury.

While the menu features traditional meat-based dishes such as shish tawook (marinated chicken breast skewers with chilli bread and garlic) and kibbeh (fried burghul wheat balls filled with mince and onion), it also celebrates the vegetarian and vegan dishes that are essential to Middle Eastern cuisine, such as hommos, fattoush, falafel and tabouli.

Azima is now available to book for lunch and dinner daily from Friday 31 May.
