Last weekend University of Canberra played host to its annual music festival spectacular, Stonefest 2008.
With the unveiling of a newly positioned ‘superstage,’ a juicy all star line up and 40 years securely tucked under its belt, Stonefest saw thousands of oversized sunglass clad indie kids run through gates over Friday 31st and Saturday 1st November.
It all kicked off at 7.30pm on Friday and shot through the night, with TZU, Regurgitator, Blue King Brown, and heaps more. French trash remix star, Alan Braxe, had sweaty bodies worshiping the bass robot style right up to 4am.
Those who were up early enough on Saturday morning would have played witness to the early morning rain. But the Stone gods were watching and by 10am the rain hadn’t just dried up, but the sun was beaming down on UC’s significantly greener grass, ready for another massive day.
Gated opened at 11.30am, with local girl Ashleigh Mannix taking to the stage by midday. With the previous night’s shenanigans taking its toll, turn out this early was fairly scarce but Ashleigh’s sugar coated vocals and acoustic vibe managed to nurse exhausted punters back to health.
By the time the Drones hit the stage, everyone was itching to go and sways turned to jumps. The Grates’ Patience whipped out her infamous ‘ribbon on a stick’ and Faker had punters screaming their cult lyrics right back at them.
Dandy Warhols was a stand out set, pulling out moody tunes and the sing-a-long classics, ‘We used to be friends and ‘Heroin is so passé.’ Grinspoon topped off Stonefest 2008, with a high impact set and a jam packed mosh pit.
