ABC Classic FM’s Felix Hayman has hailed her as ‘one of the most important contributors to the overall pattern of a contemporary Australian music in this society’ – and for one night only at The Street Theatre Zulya Kamalova and her band ‘The Children of the Underground’ will perform their sumptuous, expressive brand of folk music as part of a national tour stretching from Melbourne to Mackay.

Zulya, originally from Tatarstan in central Russia, is familiar to audiences throughout Australia as a performer of traditional and original music derived from her Tatar and Russian cultural roots.

Zulya’s unique sound, distinctly Russian song writing and the extraordinary musicianship of her band members create melancholy, beauty and drama while weaving through a combination of musical styles.

Zulya and The Children of the Underground released their album 3 Nights in 2007, winning the 2007 ARIA Award for World Music Album of the Year. Their album The Waltz of Emptiness won the National Film and Sound Archive’s Best Album award in 2005.

Zulya has performed at major festivals and venues, including Woodford Folk Festival, the Speigeltent, and the National Folk Festival in Australia, and internationally at The Moods (Zurich, Switzerland), Kulturbrauerei (Berlin, Germany), Szene (Vienna, Austria), Kulturfabrik (Luxembourg), and Red Square among many others.
