Have no doubt about it, Jen Taylor know how to rock. As OutInCanberra’s resident music critic, it’s odd not to find her out a few nights a week taking in the sweetest sounds in Canberra’s live music scene. We asked Jen what here favourite moments were for 2014 – not necessarily the best gigs, but those moments – sometimes fleeting – where the moment becomes magical. So, in her own words, here is the first part of Jen’s Top Ten.

Canberra has seen an array of both mind-blowing and strangely interesting music moments throughout 2014 – From festivals, to Coolio’s Monday Night gig, to Courtney Love screaming out her grunge ballads. But what makes the cut for the list of best music moments in Canberra for 2014?

10. Husky playing Leonard Cohen acoustically.
– Transit Bar, November

There was certainly something special about the boys from Husky venturing into the audience and singing the Leonard Cohen classic Lover Lover Lover, accompanied by their acoustic guitar, piano accordion, tambourine, and a group of Canberra’s Transit Bar-frequenters as back up vocalists. The lights were down, the crowd were mostly hushed, and the performance was intimate.

9. The great farewell to Bluejuice.
– ANU Bar, October

This makes the list because it was such an iconic moment in Australian music, not to mention just a totally crazy night. It featured a shirtless Jake, glow-sticks, crippling of crowd members, and spitting. They certainly went out in true Bluejuice fashion.

8. The beautiful and uplifting Glass Towers.
– Transit Bar, April

Perhaps not the most anticipated gig of the year, or the most well-known band who has visited Canberra, but this was one of the most memorable nights of the year. Glass Towers put on a spectacular show, and hopefully it won’t be the last Canberra sees of them.

7. Folk time with Little May and Winterbourne.
– The Front Bar & Gallery, November.

It turns out that Little May, Winterbourne and The Front make a killer combination. This gig was fun, relaxed and altogether enjoyable. The feature of the night was definitely the impressive harmonies.

6 – Kingswood being generally great.
– ANU Bar, October

Kingswood is just one of those bands that are always brilliant live. They can be guaranteed to put on an incredibly fun and top-notch live act. Their energy levels are second to none, and they totally rocked ANU Bar, with their driving guitars and flawless vocals.

That’s a pretty good start, Jen. However we look forward to seeing the rest next week!
